Cancun Weather in March 2027: 84°F Days, 3 to 4 Cold Fronts & Spring Break

Cancun weather in March: highs around 84°F, sea near 79 to 81°F and little rain, plus 3 to 4 cold fronts forecast for March 2027. Spring Break and Semana Santa dates, the equinox weekend, sargassum and fixed airport rates.

Cancun weather in March is warm and mostly dry, with daytime highs around 84°F (29°C), sea water near 79 to 81°F (26 to 27°C) and only a few short showers. The catch is wind. Forecasters expect 3 to 4 cold fronts across the Yucatán Peninsula in March 2027, and each one can bring a day or two of north wind, choppy water and red flags on the beach.

March in Numbers

Climate figures for Cancún vary a lot depending on who publishes them, so treat these as typical ranges rather than exact averages. Even a single travel page we checked lists March rain as 11 mm in one table and about 50 mm in its overview.

MeasureTypical March range
Daytime highAround 84°F (29°C)
Night lowAbout 70 to 75°F (21 to 24°C)
Sea temperatureAbout 79 to 81°F (26 to 27°C)
RainfallLow, with published totals from 11 to 50 mm (0.4 to 2 inches)
SunshineRoughly 9 hours a day

In plain terms, you’ll want shorts during the day and maybe a light layer for a windy evening on the lagoon side. Nights cooler than that are rare, and they come with a front.

Cold Fronts: How Many and What They Do

Two forecasts are out for the 2026 to 2027 season. Yucatán’s civil protection office (Procivy) projects 29 fronts from September to April, with 4 of them in March, as reported by Por Esto on September 1, 2026. Diario de Yucatán, citing Meteored México on September 25, 2026, gives 3 for March and says the season should run into mid-April.

On top of that, NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center said on October 8, 2026 that a strong El Niño is likely through early 2027, which in this region tends to mean a more unsettled winter. Nobody can tell you today which week a front will arrive. They usually show up with a few days of warning in the forecast.

What a front means for your trip: a breezy, cloudier day, rough surf on the Hotel Zone beaches facing open sea, and sometimes a pause on boats to Isla Mujeres or Cozumel when the port authority closes the harbor. It rarely ruins more than a day. Keep one flexible day in your plans for the ferry or a snorkel trip and you’re covered.

Crowds: Spring Break, Then Semana Santa

March is one of the busiest months of the year in Cancún. US universities break mostly between early and mid-March, and in 2027 Mexico’s Holy Week starts right after, with Palm Sunday on March 21 and Easter Sunday on March 28. That stacks foreign and domestic visitors back to back.

Practically, that means busier beaches and restaurants, fuller flights and longer lines at airport immigration on peak weekends. We cover the student side in our Spring Break 2027 guide and the Mexican holiday in our Semana Santa guide.

The Equinox Weekend

The spring equinox falls on Saturday, March 20, 2027. That’s the weekend the famous light and shadow effect draws its biggest crowds to Chichén Itzá, about two and a half hours from Cancún. If you want to go, read our Chichén Itzá spring equinox 2027 guide before you plan the day.

Sargassum in March

March is usually the tail end of the quieter season for sargassum, and arrivals can start to pick up toward April. Beaches on the north side of the Hotel Zone, facing Isla Mujeres, tend to get less of it than the long east-facing stretch. Our sargassum guide explains how to check the official reports before you go.

With airport lines longer in March, book before you fly and give us your flight number. Your driver follows the flight and is there when you come out, whether immigration takes 20 minutes or an hour.
