Cancun to Coba Private Transfer: Nohoch Mul Open Again, Route & Quote (2026)

Cancun to Coba private transfer: about 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 30 each way via Tulum. Nohoch Mul reopened to climbers in December 2025, two driving routes, a sample day with cenotes and Tulum, and how to get one fixed quote.

A Cancun to Coba private transfer is a drive of about 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes each way, usually down the coast to Tulum and then inland on the Cobá road. Cobá isn’t on our fixed rate table, so we quote it per trip: send your date, pickup point and group size on WhatsApp and you get one price for the whole vehicle, with any stops you want included.

Two Ways to Drive to Cobá

Most of our Cobá trips go through Tulum. You take Highway 307 south along the coast, then turn inland for roughly 45 km through small Maya villages. The other way uses the toll highway toward Valladolid and then drops south to Cobá, which makes sense if Valladolid or Chichén Itzá is also on your list.

RouteUsual drive from CancúnGood for

These times are our estimates for a normal day. Holiday traffic out of Playa del Carmen and Tulum can stretch the coastal route.

Nohoch Mul Is Climbable Again

This is the news that brought Cobá back onto a lot of itineraries. After six years closed to climbers, Nohoch Mul reopened with a new wooden staircase on December 8, 2025, according to Ruptura 360. INAH’s bulletin of December 26, 2025 describes the pyramid as 42 meters tall and the highest in the northern Maya area.

The new stairs are built for going up and down safely, with separate lanes for the flow of people. Rules at archaeological sites can change with crowds or weather, so treat the climb as likely rather than guaranteed and check at the entrance on the day.

What a Day at Cobá Looks Like

Cobá is spread out under the forest, and the main groups of buildings are linked by old raised Maya roads called sacbés. You can walk them, rent a bike at the entrance or hire a pedal taxi. Nohoch Mul is the farthest point from the gate, so people who walk usually budget two to three hours for the whole visit.

Heat is the real factor. The site gets humid by late morning, and the climb is in full sun at the top. That’s why we usually suggest leaving Cancún around 7:00 am, so you’re walking in by about 9:30.

Building One Trip With Several Stops

Cobá rarely gets a trip to itself. The three cenotes near the village, Choo-Ha, Tamcach-Ha and Multun-Ha, are a short drive from the site, and Tulum is on the way back. Here’s a sample day we’d plan from the Hotel Zone:

Time (approx.)Stop
7:00 amPickup at your hotel in Cancún
9:30 amCobá site, about 2.5 hours
12:15 pmOne of the Cobá cenotes, about 1 hour
2:00 pmLate lunch in Tulum
5:30 pmBack at your hotel

Tell us which stops you want and roughly how long you’d like at each one. We put it all into a single total for the vehicle, so there’s nothing to settle with the driver along the way. If you’re coming straight from a flight, we can also start the day at the airport.

A Private Ride or a Group Tour?

Big bus tours often pair Cobá with Tulum and a cenote in one long day, and they work if you don’t mind the schedule. A private transfer is better when you want to arrive before the tour groups, stay longer at the pyramid or skip a stop. It also helps with small kids or older travelers, since you can leave whenever you’ve had enough.
