When the Crowds Arrive: Spring Break 2027 Dates
There isn’t one spring break. Each university sets its own, and the weeks stack up. Here’s what a sample of official 2026-2027 academic calendars shows:

Two waves stand out: the week starting around March 6 and a bigger one from March 13 to 21. Then Easter falls on March 28, 2027, and Mexican schools are off for Semana Santa from March 22 into early April, according to the SEP calendar as reported by TV Azteca and Fox Sports México in summer 2026. So the last week of March swaps college groups for Mexican families, and the hotels stay full.
How Big Is Spring Break in Cancún Now?
Smaller than its reputation. Por Esto reported in April 2026 that 39,567 students arrived in Quintana Roo for spring break 2026, slightly more than in 2025, with over half staying in Cancún. The same report put the old average closer to 150,000 a season.
The airport tells a similar story. ASUR’s filing for March 2026 showed 2,801,790 passengers at Cancún, down 4.6% from March 2025. March is still one of the busiest months of the year, though, and immigration lines in mid-March can be long. Our immigration wait times guide explains what to expect.
Getting a Group From the Airport
This is where spring break trips usually go sideways. Eight friends land on three different flights, someone’s bag is missing, and the group ends up negotiating taxis at the curb. A booked ride per arrival time solves most of it.

Two tips from the groups we move every March. If your friends land more than an hour apart, book separate pickups instead of making the first arrivals wait in the terminal. And put one person in charge of the booking, with everyone’s flight numbers, so the driver tracks the right plane.
Rules and Safety Notes for 2027
On March 2, 2026, the US Embassy in Mexico issued a spring break message to US citizens. Among its points, as reported by The Cancun Sun and FamilyTravel.org: vapes and e-liquids are banned in Mexico, firearms and even spent ammunition are prohibited, counterfeit alcohol and medicines are a risk, and rip currents are dangerous on beaches with few lifeguards. It also advised using official airport taxis or reputable services. Expect a similar message before spring break 2027.
The State Department’s Mexico advisory, issued May 29, 2026, lists Quintana Roo at Level 2, “Exercise increased caution,” with advice to stay in well-lit tourist areas after dark. Re-read it before you travel since it gets updated.
