Semana Santa in Cancún: 85.8% Hotel Occupancy and What to Expect (2027)

Semana Santa 2027 runs March 21 to 28. What to expect in Cancún: near-86% hotel occupancy, heavier Hotel Zone traffic, and how a fixed-rate transfer avoids the curb-side price scramble.

The Short Answer

Semana Santa (Holy Week) 2027 runs from Palm Sunday, March 21, through Easter Sunday, March 28. It’s the week Mexico’s own school calendar shuts down nationally, so instead of the usual mix of foreign tourists, Cancún fills up with Mexican families from Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, and every other part of the country heading to the coast at the same time. Expect noticeably fuller beaches, heavier traffic on the Hotel Zone boulevard, and hotel occupancy in the mid-80s percent range, based on what actually happened in 2026. It’s a real spike, busier than an ordinary March week, but it doesn’t reach the 100 to 200 percent price surges of Christmas and New Year, since Semana Santa demand is spread across a longer, more domestic wave rather than concentrated on two single nights.

Why Semana Santa Is Mexico’s Biggest Domestic Travel Week

Christmas and New Year in Cancún are driven largely by international visitors and Mexican families already off work for the holidays. Semana Santa is different. The SEP, Mexico’s public education authority, closes every public school in the country for the same two weeks, this cycle running March 22 through April 2, 2027, with classes resuming April 3. That single national school break sends millions of Mexican travelers to the beach at once, and Quintana Roo is consistently one of the top three destinations they choose.

The scale is real and measurable. In 2026, Mexico’s federal tourism ministry projected roughly 4.03 million visitors nationwide during the Semana Santa travel window, a 2.6 percent increase over 2025, with total spending near 55.9 billion pesos, about $3.1 billion USD. National hotel occupancy averaged 63.8 percent, but beach destinations, Cancún, Riviera Maya, Puerto Vallarta, and Los Cabos among them, ran well above 75 percent. Cancún’s Hotel Zone specifically opened Semana Santa week at 81.6 percent occupancy and climbed to 85.8 percent by the height of the holiday, ahead of the 75.5 percent it posted over the same dates the year before. Cancún International Airport handled 616 total flight operations in a single day that week, and the Hotel Zone hosted more than 69,000 guests in one night alone. Costa Mujeres and Isla Mujeres ran close behind at roughly 86 percent, and Puerto Morelos hit 79.6 percent. This pattern repeats every year Semana Santa lands, so treat 2026’s numbers as a reliable preview of what 2027 will look like, not a one-off.

Weather in Late March: Still the Dry Season

The good news is that Semana Santa lands squarely inside Cancún’s best weather stretch. As we cover in detail in our month-by-month guide, March and April are the driest months of the year here, averaging under 50 mm of rain each, with warm days and low humidity. That same guide points out that March already carries the highest demand of the dry season because of spring break traffic layered on top of already-strong winter demand, and Semana Santa is the sharpest single week inside that broader crunch. In plain terms: you’re not choosing between good weather and a busy trip. The weather is reliably good precisely during the window when everyone else wants to travel too.

Which Zones Fill Up Most

The Hotel Zone takes the biggest hit, running in the mid-80s percent occupancy through the week based on 2026’s numbers. But the surge isn’t limited to Cancún proper. Isla Mujeres and Costa Mujeres see similarly high occupancy from day-trippers and travelers looking for a quieter alternative just a short ferry ride away, and Puerto Morelos fills up too, both with hotel guests and with domestic travelers who drive down for the day. Downtown Playa del Carmen sees a version of this that’s easy to miss if you only think about hotel occupancy: its main plaza and boardwalk fill with Mexican families on vacation, not just the usual international beachgoers on Quinta Avenida.

What This Means for Your Airport Transfer

More flights, more check-ins on the same days, and more traffic on Boulevard Kukulcán add up to real friction at the exact moments you can least afford it: right after you land, and right before your flight home. With 600-plus flight operations landing and departing Cancún International Airport in a single day during peak Semana Santa dates, taxi lines at the curb get longer and shared shuttles fill up faster than usual. Showing up without a reservation and expecting to grab whatever’s parked outside arrivals works fine in September. It doesn’t work as well the week half the country is also trying to get a ride.

Booking a private transfer ahead of time removes that risk entirely. Your driver tracks your actual flight, so a delay doesn’t strand you, and the price is locked in before you land, not negotiated at the curb after a long flight with a Mexican peso price you can’t quite verify.

Semana Santa Prices Don’t Change With Us

Yesmytransfer’s prices don’t change for Semana Santa. Our rates start from $32 USD per vehicle, one way, for 1 to 6 passengers, depending on your zone, and that is what you’d pay booking directly, before you ever negotiate with anyone at the curb, and it’s consistently cheaper than what a traveler pays haggling for a ride during the busiest week of the year. Hotel Zone, airport, and downtown Cancún runs are from $32 USD. Puerto Morelos is from $52 USD. Playa del Carmen is from $69 USD. Those are per vehicle, one way, for 1 to 6 passengers (7 passengers and larger groups are quoted in the booking tool, and you can see all current rates). Frequently Asked Questions

When is Semana Santa 2027 in Cancún?
Semana Santa 2027 runs from Palm Sunday, March 21, through Easter Sunday, March 28. Mexico’s national school vacation window is slightly longer, running March 22 through April 2, 2027, with classes resuming April 3.

Is Cancún as crowded during Semana Santa as during Christmas and New Year?
It’s busier than a normal week but generally less extreme than Christmas and New Year. In 2026, Hotel Zone occupancy peaked around 85.8 percent during Semana Santa, compared with the 80 to 200 percent price surges that hit specifically over the Christmas and New Year’s week windows. Semana Santa’s demand also skews far more domestic, driven by Mexico’s national school break rather than international holiday travel.

What is the weather like in Cancún during Semana Santa?
Excellent. Late March falls inside the driest stretch of the year, with under 50 mm of average rainfall and warm, sunny days. The weather itself is not a concern during this window.

Do transfer or taxi prices go up during Semana Santa?
With a fixed-rate provider like ours, no. Our published prices, from $32 to $69 USD per vehicle depending on your zone, stay the same year-round. Without a reservation, expect longer taxi lines and more room to get overcharged at the curb simply because demand is higher.

Which areas get busiest during Semana Santa?
Cancún’s Hotel Zone sees the largest jump in occupancy, but Isla Mujeres, Costa Mujeres, and Puerto Morelos all run close behind, and downtown Playa del Carmen fills with domestic vacationers on top of its usual crowd.
