Chichen Itza Spring Equinox 2027: Saturday, March 20, Hours & Crowds

The Chichen Itza spring equinox 2027 falls on Saturday, March 20, the day before Holy Week starts. The one-hour time difference with Cancún, the 2026 hours and rules, attendance figures and a sample day from the Hotel Zone.

The Chichen Itza spring equinox 2027 falls on Saturday, March 20, 2027, and the light and shadow effect on the Temple of Kukulcán is usually visible in the late afternoon on the days around it. Expect one of the busiest weekends of the year at the site. In 2026, INAH planned for more than 30,000 visitors over the equinox days, and Holy Week starts the very next day in 2027.

When to Watch: Dates and the Time Zone Trap

The astronomical equinox is on March 20, 2027 at 20:24 UTC. That’s 2:24 pm at Chichén Itzá and 3:24 pm in Cancún, because the two states don’t share a clock. Yucatán runs one hour behind Quintana Roo all year.

That hour trips people up every season. If your hotel is in Cancún or the Riviera Maya and someone tells you the shadow shows “from 3 pm”, ask which clock they mean. Infobae, citing INAH, put the effect at roughly 3:00 to 5:00 pm local time on the days near the 2026 equinox.

The effect itself is a row of triangles of light running down the northern stairway, ending at the carved serpent heads at its base. It doesn’t only happen on the exact day. The days just before and after look very similar, which is useful if you’d rather avoid the peak.

How Busy It Gets

The numbers keep climbing. Infobae reported on March 12, 2026 that 32,872 people attended the equinox days in 2025 and that INAH expected more than 30,000 in 2026. After the 2026 weekend, Yucatán’s tourism secretary told Diario de Yucatán that more than 24,000 visitors came, against an expected 15,000, and called it a record. The two counts likely cover different days, but the message is the same.

For 2027 the calendar makes it heavier. The equinox lands on a Saturday, and Palm Sunday, the start of Mexico’s Semana Santa holiday, is on March 21. Families from across the country will already be traveling.

What INAH Allowed in 2026

INAH hasn’t published its 2027 operation yet, so here’s how the 2026 one worked. It’s the best guide to what you’ll find.

  • Opening at 9:00 am on Friday and 8:00 am on Saturday and Sunday, Chichén Itzá time.
  • Ticket sales and entry closed at 4:00 pm, and the site was cleared by 5:30 pm.
  • Tickets sold only at the box office or the official kiosks on site.
  • No drones, no ceremonies and no entry to restricted areas.
  • Professional photo or video gear needed a permit from INAH Yucatán in advance.

Notice the squeeze. With entry closing at 4:00 pm, you need to be inside well before the shadow peaks. Arriving at the gate at 3:30 pm on equinox Saturday is asking for trouble.

Getting There From Cancún

The drive from Cancún to Chichén Itzá is usually about 2 hours 30 minutes on the toll highway toward Mérida, a little more from Playa del Carmen. On equinox weekend we’d plan on extra time for the parking lot and the line at the entrance.

Here’s the timing we’d suggest from the Cancún Hotel Zone, written in both clocks so nothing gets mixed up:

StepCancún timeChichén Itzá time
Pickup at your hotel8:00 am7:00 am
Arrive at the siteAbout 10:45 amAbout 9:45 am
Lunch nearby or in Valladolid, then back insideEarly afternoonBefore 3:00 pm
Leave after the shadowAbout 6:30 pmAbout 5:30 pm
Back at your hotelAbout 9:00 pmAbout 8:00 pm

One thing to check before you rely on that plan: whether a ticket allows you to leave and come back in on the same day. If it doesn’t, stay inside or arrive later. Many people make it easier by sleeping in Valladolid, about 45 minutes away, and driving over in the morning.

We don’t publish a fixed rate to Chichén Itzá. Send us your date, pickup point and group size on WhatsApp and we’ll reply with one price for the whole vehicle, waiting time included. Equinox Saturday fills early, so ask sooner rather than later.
