ADO Bus vs Colectivo vs Private Transfer in Cancún: 2026 Comparison

ADO bus vs colectivo vs private transfer in Cancún: real 2026 prices, travel times, and why ADO never drops off at your hotel.

The Short Answer

The ADO bus is the cheapest way to get around the Cancún–Riviera Maya corridor, but it only drops off at official ADO stations, never at your hotel or a resort entrance, and you’ll need a separate taxi or transfer for that last stretch. A private transfer costs more than the bus fare alone, but it goes straight from the airport to your hotel door, with no station stop and no second vehicle to arrange.

ADO Bus: Prices, Times & Where It Actually Drops You Off

From Cancún Airport, ADO runs to Playa del Carmen for about $12 to $15 USD per person, a 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minute ride, with departures roughly every 30 to 60 minutes. To Tulum, the fare is about $25 USD per person from the airport (less from downtown Cancún), a 2 to 2.5 hour ride with departures every 1 to 2 hours.

The detail that catches first-time riders off guard: ADO buses only stop at official ADO stations, in Playa del Carmen that’s downtown near Quinta Avenida, in Tulum that’s the downtown station, never at a hotel or resort gate. If your hotel isn’t within easy walking distance of that station, you’re arranging a taxi or local transfer for the final leg, with your own luggage, after an already long ride.

Shared Colectivo Vans

A shared colectivo van is a different option from the ADO bus: smaller, informal, and it does drop passengers at multiple hotels along its route, just not directly to yours without stops along the way. See our full breakdown in shared shuttle vs private sedan vs private van for how that compares on price and time.

Private Transfer: What You Actually Get for the Extra Cost

Our private transfers are priced by destination and group size, and go straight from the airport to your hotel’s entrance with no station stop, no transferring your own luggage between vehicles, and no walking the last few blocks with bags. Your driver also tracks your flight number, so a delayed landing doesn’t cost you your seat the way a fixed-departure bus or shuttle can. The prices below are “from” rates per vehicle, one way, for 1 to 6 passengers; 7 passengers and larger groups are quoted in the booking tool, and you can see all current rates.

Which One Actually Makes Sense for You

Traveling solo or as a couple on a tight budget, staying within walking distance of the ADO station itself, and comfortable managing your own bags on a fixed schedule? The bus is genuinely the cheapest way to go. Traveling with a group, kids, a lot of luggage, or a hotel that isn’t near a station, and a fixed per-vehicle private transfer usually works out closer to the bus’s per-person cost once you split it across your group, without the extra taxi leg at the end.

Cancún airport taxis and unofficial transfer stands do not run on a meter, and there is no posted rate board to check before you get in. Land without a reservation and the price gets negotiated on the spot, and on longer routes like Playa del Carmen or Tulum we have seen it climb $100 or more over a fair price. Yesmytransfer skips that negotiation entirely: our price is fixed and published before you ever step into a vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the ADO bus drop off at hotels?
No. ADO only stops at official bus stations, never at a hotel or resort entrance, so you’ll need a separate taxi or transfer for the last stretch.

How much is the ADO bus from Cancún Airport to Playa del Carmen?
About $12 to $15 USD per person, a 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minute ride.

Is a private transfer worth it over the ADO bus?
If you’re traveling with a group, luggage, or a hotel that isn’t near a station, yes, the per-person cost narrows once you split a private transfer’s per-vehicle rate, and you skip the extra taxi leg at the end.

Can I use a colectivo van instead of ADO?
Yes, a shared colectivo van does drop at multiple hotels, unlike ADO, but it makes stops along the way and runs on its own fixed departure window.
