Cancun to Chetumal Private Transfer: 380 km to the Belize Boats (2026)

Cancun to Chetumal private transfer: roughly 380 km and 4.5 to 5 hours on Highway 307. How to time the afternoon boat to San Pedro and Caye Caulker, exit paperwork, the 2026 bridge works, the Tren Maya alternative and stops in Bacalar.

A Cancun to Chetumal private transfer is a drive of roughly 380 km down Highway 307 that usually takes about 4.5 to 5 hours, and it ends either in Chetumal itself or at the dock where boats leave for San Pedro and Caye Caulker in Belize. We don’t publish a fixed rate for Chetumal. Message us your date, pickup point and number of passengers on WhatsApp and we send back a single price for the whole vehicle. We drive you to Chetumal, the ferry terminal or the airport there, and we don’t cross into Belize.

Who Takes This Drive

Most people asking us about Chetumal fall into three groups. Some are heading to Belize and want to catch the afternoon boat to the cayes. Some are visiting the Maya sites near the border, like Kohunlich. And some have business or family in the state capital and just want a direct ride from the airport without changing buses.

All three share the same problem: Cancún has the international flights, Chetumal doesn’t, and the two are a long way apart.

Making the Afternoon Boat to Belize

This is the part people get wrong. Boats from Chetumal’s ferry terminal, known locally as the Muelle Fiscal, run to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye and on to Caye Caulker. When San Pedro Belize Express upgraded its Chetumal service in 2024, the San Pedro Sun reported a 3:30 pm departure from Chetumal, and a travel guide updated in September 2026 still lists that afternoon slot, noting that operators ask you to arrive well ahead for exit paperwork. Schedules change with the season, so confirm with the boat company for your date.

Now work backwards. To be at the dock by about 1:30 pm, you’d want to leave Cancún by roughly 8:30 am. That means a same-day connection from a flight almost never works. A morning flight landing at 10:00 am puts you in Chetumal mid-afternoon, after the boat has gone.

Your situationWhat usually works
Landing in Cancún, want the boat to the cayesNight in Cancún or Bacalar, early pickup next morning
Already staying in Cancún or Playa del CarmenPickup around 7:30 to 8:30 am, direct to the dock
Crossing by land into CorozalDrop-off in Chetumal, then local transport to the border
Staying in Chetumal or visiting KohunlichAny daytime pickup that gets you there before dark

The pickup times above are our planning estimates, not guarantees. We’ll suggest a time when you send your boat or hotel details.

Paperwork for Leaving Mexico

We’re not immigration advisers, so check official sources before you go. Two points come up in nearly every conversation. First, keep the record of your Mexican entry, whether that’s the stamp or the digital receipt you got at the airport. Second, the non-resident fee is normally included in your airline ticket when you fly in, so keep your itemized airline receipt in case you’re asked about it at the exit.

On the Belize side, the US State Department says US citizens need a passport book (a passport card doesn’t work by land) and don’t need a visa for stays up to 30 days. Belize was at Level 2 in the advisory issued in March 2026.

Bridges, Trains and the Airport: 2026 Updates

If you’re crossing by land, note the bridge works. Ruptura 360 reported that the Río Hondo international bridge at Subteniente López would close completely from May 1 to August 31, 2026 for reconstruction, with migration and customs moved to the Chac-Temal bridge. In June 2026 the work was 37% complete, so ask your onward transport which crossing is open on your date.

The Tren Maya also reaches Chetumal. An unofficial schedule site updated on October 13, 2026 shows two daily departures from Cancún Aeropuerto to Chetumal Aeropuerto, at about 5 hours 21 minutes, and Crónica listed the 2026 international fare for that route at 1,269 pesos. The station sits by the airport, a 15 to 20 minute ride from the bay according to the state tourism board, and in January 2026 Por Esto reported a temporary suspension of Chetumal departures after damage to the track.

The airport itself is changing names. Grupo Animal reported in September 2026 that it will become Chetumal-Bacalar International Airport. Its flights mostly link with Mexico City, which is why international travelers still land in Cancún.

Stops Along the Way

Bacalar. The lagoon sits about 40 km before Chetumal, so it’s the natural place to break the trip or spend a night before the boat. Our Cancún to Bacalar guide has the details.

Tulum. Roughly at the halfway point and a good lunch stop on a long drive day.

Kohunlich. About 65 km west of Chetumal. Riviera Maya News reported that it reopened in January 2025 after upgrades, open daily from 8 am to 5 pm. It’s a separate trip from the city rather than a stop on the way in.

In town, the Museo de la Cultura Maya and the bayfront boulevard are the usual first visits. Por Esto reported in April 2026 that erosion has damaged parts of the northern stretch of Boulevard Bahía toward Calderitas.
