A Cancun to Mahahual private transfer covers about 356 km from Cancún Airport, and the drive usually takes around 4.5 hours: south on Highway 307 through Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Felipe Carrillo Puerto, then east from the Cafetal turnoff on the last road to the coast. We don’t publish a fixed rate for Mahahual. Send us your date, pickup point and group size on WhatsApp and we reply with one total price for the vehicle, which you can accept or turn down.
Mahahual Isn’t Cancún’s Neighbor
People sometimes book a Cancún flight for Mahahual because both sit on the Mexican Caribbean. On a map they look close. In practice Mahahual is in the far south of Quintana Roo, on what’s called the Costa Maya, much nearer to Bacalar and Chetumal than to the Hotel Zone.
The town itself is small. Uno TV, citing the state tourism information system in May 2026, put the population at 2,247. Most visitors know it for the Costa Maya cruise port, which opened in 2001 and received 2.4 million cruise passengers and 571 ship calls in 2025, according to figures reported by Uno TV in January 2026. Away from the pier, Mahahual is a sandy malecón, small hotels and dive shops facing the reef.

The Route, Leg by Leg
| Leg | Road | Rough time |
|---|---|---|
| Cancún Airport to Playa del Carmen | Highway 307, four lanes | About 50 minutes |
| Playa del Carmen to Tulum | Highway 307 | About 1 hour |
| Tulum to Felipe Carrillo Puerto | Highway 307 south | About 1 hour 15 minutes |
| Felipe Carrillo Puerto to the Cafetal turnoff | Highway 307 south | About 45 minutes |
| Cafetal to Mahahual | Two-lane road east, a little over 50 km | About 45 minutes |
Those times are our estimates for a daytime drive with no long stops, and they add up to roughly 4.5 hours. Speed bumps in villages, checkpoints and roadworks can stretch it. Plan on closer to 5 hours if you land in the afternoon and want one stop for food.
The last stretch deserves a note. In January 2026, Por Esto reported that residents were asking for urgent repaving of the Cafetal to Mahahual road, the only land access to the Costa Maya, describing potholes up to 15 cm deep after years without maintenance. Your driver knows the road, but it’s one reason we prefer to finish this leg in daylight.
Timing Your Flight Around a 4.5-Hour Drive
Here’s the math we walk people through. Say your flight lands at 1:00 pm. Give yourself about an hour for immigration, bags and customs, so you leave the airport around 2:00 pm. Add 4.5 hours and you’re in Mahahual close to 6:30 pm, which in winter is after dark.
Land at 10:00 am instead and you’re there by mid-afternoon with time to spare. If your only option is an evening arrival, a night in Cancún or Playa del Carmen and an early start the next morning usually makes for a better first day than reaching the coast road at 9 pm.

Worth Stopping on the Way?
A private car lets you break the trip. The two stops that make the most sense:
Tulum, about halfway. A lunch break in town splits the drive into two easy halves. It adds time, but most families find it worth it.
Bacalar, as a detour or a split stay. Bacalar is south of the Cafetal turnoff, so it isn’t on the direct line. Travel Mexico Solo puts it about 104 km and 1 hour 15 minutes from Mahahual. Plenty of travelers spend two nights at the lagoon and then go on to the coast. Our Cancún to Bacalar guide covers that leg.

Other Ways to Get There
Bus. Direct buses from Cancún to Mahahual are few. When we checked a booking site on October 14, 2026, it listed one daily direct departure, taking about five hours, and other routes change buses in Playa del Carmen or Chetumal. Check ADO’s own site for your date.
Train. The Tren Maya stops at Limones-Chacchoben, the closest station to Mahahual, and you’d still need a taxi or van for the last part. That works if you travel light and your times line up.
Flying into Chetumal. Chetumal’s airport is about 142 km from Mahahual, around two hours by road, but it mostly connects with Mexico City. For international visitors, Cancún usually ends up simpler.
What’s Happening in Mahahual Now

Two pieces of news shape the town this year. In May 2026, Royal Caribbean withdrew its planned “Perfect Day” development at Mahahual, and Grupo Animal reported in September 2026 that some 2027 Carnival itineraries drop the Costa Maya. Fewer ship days means quieter beach days in town.
Sargassum is the other. Riviera Maya News reported in February 2026 that the Navy installed barriers on the Costa Maya ahead of a season forecast to run above 2025. If seaweed matters to your plans, check recent reports a week before you travel. Offshore, the reason many people come is Banco Chinchorro, an atoll roughly 24 km out and a biosphere reserve since 1996, reached with local dive operators.
