Cancun Weather in October 2026: Rain, Hurricanes, Sargassum & Crowds

Cancun weather in October: the wettest month of the year on paper, but the rain is short, the sea is at its warmest, sargassum is clearing and the beaches are the emptiest they get.

Cancun weather in October looks worse on a chart than it feels on the ground. October is the wettest month of the year, with highs near 31°C (88°F), lows near 24°C (75°F), a sea temperature around 29°C (84°F) and roughly 11 days with some rain. What the chart does not show is that the rain usually arrives as a heavy afternoon burst that clears in under an hour, that the sun still averages about 8 hours a day, and that this is the quietest and cheapest month on the calendar.

The Numbers

Monthly rainfall totals vary a lot depending on which dataset you read. Shorter recent averages put October near 177 mm, while the longer thirty year climate records used in most weather references push it closer to 280 mm. Either way October is the peak of the wet season and the wettest month on the Cancun calendar.

What the Rain Actually Looks Like

This is the part most weather pages get wrong. October rain in Cancun is not northern European drizzle that greys out a whole day. The usual pattern is a hot, bright morning, cloud building through early afternoon, a hard downpour somewhere between 3pm and 6pm, and clear air afterwards.

You lose an hour, not a day. The practical planning move is to front load the outdoor part of each day. Cenotes, ruins and boat trips in the morning, lunch and pool in the afternoon when the sky closes in.

The other thing October gives you is a landscape at its greenest. Months of rain leave the jungle inland from Puerto Morelos and along Highway 307 completely full, which is a very different photograph from the dry brown version you get in April.

Hurricane Risk in October

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and the climatological peak is September 10 according to the National Hurricane Center, with most activity falling between mid August and mid October. That means the first third of October still sits inside the active window, and the risk drops off noticeably after roughly the middle of the month.

So October is not equal all the way through. October 1 to 10 carries the same order of risk as late September. By the final week the odds have fallen a long way, which is why late October and November are the months experienced repeat visitors keep coming back to.

Historically the storm that shaped Cancun, Hurricane Wilma, arrived in October 2005 and sat over the coast for more than a day. That is a real event, not a typical one. In most Octobers the effect of a tropical system on a Cancun holiday is not a direct hit, it is a day of wind and rain from a storm passing well offshore, or a flight rescheduled a day either side. Our full breakdown is in the hurricane season guide.

Sargassum in October

Good news here. Sargassum is at its worst from May through August, and October sits on the clearing side of the curve. Some October weeks still bring patches, particularly on the east facing beaches, but the volume is a fraction of the summer peak, and the cleanest stretch of the whole year starts in November.

Beach orientation matters as much as the month. Isla Mujeres and the north facing beaches of the Hotel Zone take far less than the east facing ones. The sargassum guide breaks that down beach by beach.

Crowds and Prices

October is the deepest part of low season. Hotel rates commonly run 30 percent or more below the December to April prices, restaurants take walk ins, and the popular beaches are genuinely uncrowded rather than merely less crowded.

If your priority is value and space, October is close to the best month of the year. If your priority is a guaranteed run of cloudless days, it is not. Our high season versus low season comparison puts the trade in numbers.

What October Means for Your Transfer

Two things change in the wet season, and neither of them is the price.

The first is flight delays. October weather disrupts schedules more often than February weather does, both here and at your departure airport. A shared shuttle that leaves on a fixed timetable is the option that hurts when that happens. A private transfer tracks the actual flight and waits for it, so a two hour delay changes nothing about the pickup.

The second is the drive itself. Heavy rain slows Highway 307 and the Hotel Zone boulevard, and standing water is normal for an hour after a hard downpour. That is an argument for building a buffer into your departure day, not for changing how you get around.

Our rates are the same in October as they are at Christmas: from $32 USD to the Cancun Hotel Zone, the airport area and downtown Cancun, from $52 USD to Puerto Morelos, and from $69 USD to Playa del Carmen, per vehicle and one way, for 1 to 6 passengers (larger groups are quoted in the booking tool; see all current rates).

How Our Prices Compare to Paying at the Curb

Airport taxis and unofficial stands do not run a meter and do not post a visible rate card. Negotiating a ride at the curb with no reservation typically costs $20 to $50 USD more than a pre booked private transfer, and over $100 USD more on long runs like Playa del Carmen or Tulum. A quoted $45 to $60 ride to the Hotel Zone often lands at $70 to $100 for a traveler who does not know the real number. Low season does not change that, because the people quoting it are not running low season prices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is October a bad time to visit Cancun?

No, but it is a trade. October is the wettest month and the tail of hurricane season, and it is also the quietest and cheapest month with the warmest sea of the year. If you want value and empty beaches it is one of the best months. If you need a guaranteed week of unbroken sun it is not.

How much does it rain in Cancun in October?

About 11 days of the month see rain, and monthly totals range from roughly 177 mm on recent short term averages to close to 280 mm on the longer thirty year records. Most of it falls as a short, heavy afternoon storm rather than all day drizzle.

Is there sargassum in Cancun in October?

Usually far less than in summer. Sargassum peaks from May to August and clears through the autumn, with November to February the cleanest stretch of the year. East facing beaches still get more than north facing ones.

Is it safe to travel to Cancun during hurricane season in October?

Millions of people do it every year. The first ten days of October still fall inside the active part of the season, and risk drops off after mid month. The realistic impact on a holiday is a rescheduled flight or a windy day, not a direct hit.

Is the sea warm in Cancun in October?

Yes. October sea temperatures run around 29°C (84°F), which is the warmest water of the entire year, warmer than in the winter high season.
