Six Nortes Forecast for January 2027

A norte is a cold front that comes down from North America across the Gulf of Mexico. In Cancún it usually means a day or two of north wind, cloud and choppy water, then clear, dry, cooler air behind it. Diario de Yucatán reported on September 25, 2026 that meteorologist Juan Antonio Palma expects 25 fronts this season, distributed by month, and January and February get six each.

Six fronts in 31 days sounds like a lot. In practice they overlap and some are weak by the time they reach the Caribbean side of the peninsula. The same report mentioned lows as cold as 5°C in some areas between December and February, but that figure is for inland Yucatán. On the coast, a strong norte night means a sweater on the terrace, not a coat.

What it changes for your plans is the water. Boat trips to Isla Mujeres or snorkel tours can be rescheduled when the port authority closes navigation, so put those early in your stay and leave a spare day.

The Beach in January

Between fronts, January days are classic beach weather: bright sun, low humidity compared with summer and a sea that most swimmers find refreshing rather than warm. On the morning after a front, the east-facing beaches of the Hotel Zone can carry big waves and red flags. The north-facing beaches toward Playa Langosta and Playa Tortugas usually stay calmer, and so does Isla Mujeres’ north beach once the ferries run again.

Sargassum is rarely a January topic. The UNAM research group that tracks it treats November to March as the low season, with December to February the least likely months for heavy arrivals.

Mid January is the sweet spot. You get winter weather at its most reliable and fewer people than at any other point between Christmas and Easter. If your dates are flexible, the window from about January 10 to the end of the month is the one we’d point friends toward.

Getting From the Airport in January

Our fixed rates stay the same in January as in any other month. From Cancún Airport it’s from $32 USD to the Hotel Zone and downtown, from $52 to Puerto Morelos, from $69 to Playa del Carmen and from $125 to Tulum town, per vehicle, one way, for 1 to 6 passengers. We checked each of those against our published table on October 13, 2026.

Winter storms up north are the bigger risk to your arrival. A snowstorm in Chicago or Toronto can push a flight back by hours. Book with your flight number, and the driver tracks the real landing time instead of the one printed on your ticket.
