Cancun Airport to Holbox: Transfer to the Chiquilá Ferry From $240 (2026)

Cancun Airport to Holbox is two legs: about 2.5 hours by road to Chiquilá, then a 25 minute ferry. Our rate to the pier, the ferry fare, and the landing time after which you should not attempt it the same day.

Getting from Cancun Airport to Holbox takes two legs, and no company can sell you a way around the second one. The first is a road trip of about two and a half hours to the port of Chiquilá. The second is a passenger ferry of roughly 25 minutes to the island. Our private transfer covers the road leg from $240 USD per vehicle, one way, for 1 to 6 passengers. The ferry is a separate ticket you buy at the pier, and the last boat of the night is the detail that decides whether your arrival day works.

Our rate was checked against our own published rate table on October 5, 2026. The ferry fare is the one reported by Quintana Roo press in July 2026, and it can change without notice, so treat it as a planning number.

What the $240 Covers, and What It Doesn’t

The price depends on the size of your group. From 1 to 6 passengers it’s $240 USD one way. With 7 passengers it’s $250. A group of 9 to 16 travels in a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter for $800. Round trips are calculated in the quote tool, and every rate is on the price page.

What it doesn’t cover is the boat. No road vehicle crosses to Holbox, so every traveler buys a ferry ticket at the terminal in Chiquilá, whatever they paid to get there. If a quote for this route claims to be door to door, ask who is paying for the crossing.

2 passengers$240$120.00

6 passengers$240$40.00

The Ferry: Two Companies, One Pier

Two companies work the crossing, 9 Hermanos and Holbox Express. Their departures alternate, which is why the wait between boats is about 30 minutes for most of the day. You don’t need to pick one in advance. You buy a ticket for whichever leaves next.

In July 2026 the general fare was 220 pesos per person each way, with a 180 peso rate for Quintana Roo residents who show ID. Small licensed boats at the same port were offering the crossing for 200 pesos to travelers who didn’t want to wait for the next ferry. Bring pesos in cash for this part of the trip.

Published schedules put the first ferry from Chiquilá at about 6:00 am and the last one at about 9:30 pm. Coming back, the last boat leaves Holbox earlier, at about 8:30 pm. Holiday evenings can run shorter, so confirm the last departure if you’re traveling on December 24 or 31.

The Rule That Matters: Your Landing Time

Here’s the arithmetic most guides skip. The last ferry leaves Chiquilá around 9:30 pm. The drive takes about two and a half hours. Getting out of the airport takes anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour, depending on the hour you land (our immigration wait time guide has the pattern).

Add those up and the cutoff is clear. A flight that lands by about 5:00 pm reaches the pier with real margin. A flight that lands after about 5:30 pm is a gamble, and one that lands after 6:30 pm won’t make it. In that case the better plan is a night in Cancún and a morning departure, which is the cheaper zone anyway (from $32 USD to the Hotel Zone or downtown).

A delay moves the same math. Your driver follows the real flight, so the pickup adjusts on its own, but the ferry doesn’t wait for anyone. If your flight slips past the cutoff while you’re in the air, message us when you land and we’ll work out the alternative with you. More on that in what happens if your flight is delayed.

Leaving Holbox for a Flight

The return works backwards from your departure time. Count 25 minutes on the water, up to 30 minutes waiting for a boat, two and a half hours on the road, and the two to three hours airlines ask for before an international flight.

That puts you on a ferry about six hours before takeoff. For a 2:00 pm flight, that’s the 8:00 am boat. For anything departing before 11:00 am, the honest advice is to leave the island the evening before and sleep near the airport.

We set the pickup time at the Chiquilá pier with you when you book, and the driver is there when your ferry docks.

What About the Bus?

ADO runs buses toward Chiquilá from Cancún, and for a solo traveler with time, it’s the cheapest way to do this. The trade is a fixed timetable that may not line up with your flight or with the last ferry, plus a first hop from the airport to the downtown terminal. Our ADO, colectivo and private transfer comparison explains how that trade works on every route.

For three or more people, the per person numbers in the table above close most of the gap, and the vehicle leaves when you walk out of arrivals.

Once You’re on the Island

Holbox has no cars for visitors and no paved streets. The taxis are golf carts, the roads are sand, and after heavy rain some of them hold water for a day. Pack so you can carry your bag a short distance, and skip the hard shell suitcase with small wheels if you can.

If you’re still deciding whether the island is worth a day or several, start with our Holbox day trip guide. In summer the draw is the whale shark season.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get from Cancun Airport to Holbox?

Plan on about three and a half hours door to door: roughly two and a half hours by road to Chiquilá, a wait of up to 30 minutes for the next ferry, and about 25 minutes on the water.

How much is a private transfer from Cancun Airport to Chiquilá?

Our rate starts at $240 USD per vehicle, one way, for 1 to 6 passengers. It’s $250 for 7 passengers and $800 for a Sprinter van carrying 9 to 16. Rates verified October 5, 2026.

Is the Holbox ferry included in the transfer price?

No. The transfer covers the road leg to the pier in Chiquilá. The ferry is a separate ticket bought at the terminal, reported at 220 pesos per adult visitor each way in July 2026.

What is the latest I can land in Cancun and still reach Holbox the same day?

The last ferry leaves Chiquilá at about 9:30 pm. With airport exit time and a two and a half hour drive, a landing by about 5:00 pm is comfortable. After about 5:30 pm it’s a gamble, and a night in Cancún is the safer plan.

Can a car or van take me onto Holbox island?

No. Visitors’ vehicles don’t cross. Everyone takes the passenger ferry from Chiquilá, and on the island you get around by golf cart taxi, bicycle or on foot.
