Cancun Airport to Akumal Transfer: From $105 Per Vehicle (2026)

Cancun Airport to Akumal by private transfer: from $105 USD per vehicle one way, how the rate compares with the zones on either side, where drivers actually drop you, and what to know about beach access.

A private transfer from Cancun Airport to Akumal starts at $105 USD per vehicle, one way, for 1 to 6 passengers. That’s the rate in our own published table as of October 5, 2026, and it’s the same in July as it is at Christmas. Akumal sits on Highway 307 between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, so the ride is one road, no tolls, and usually between an hour and a quarter and an hour and a half depending on how Playa del Carmen is moving.

What It Costs

GroupVehicle price, one wayPer person
2 passengers$105$52.50
4 passengers$105$26.25
6 passengers$105$17.50
7 passengers$110$15.71
9 to 16 passengers (Sprinter van)$270$16.88 to $30.00

The price is for the vehicle, so a couple and a family of six pay the same $105. Round trips and 8 passenger groups are calculated in the quote tool. There’s no per bag charge and no holiday surcharge.

Is Your Hotel Really in the Akumal Zone?

This is where people overpay or get surprised. “Akumal” on a booking site can mean the bay, Half Moon Bay to the north, or a large resort several kilometers either side of the village. Our rate table splits this stretch of coast into three zones, and the difference is real money.

ZoneFrom (1 to 6 passengers)
Puerto Aventuras, Xpu-Ha and Barceló Maya$90
Akumal$105
Tulum town, Xel-Há and Soliman Bay$125

If your hotel’s address says Akumal but it sits north toward Xpu-Ha, you may fall in the $90 zone. If it’s south toward Xel-Há, it may be $125. Type the hotel name into the quote tool and it places you in the right one. You don’t have to guess from a map.

The Drive

From the airport the driver joins Highway 307 heading south and stays on it. You pass Puerto Morelos, then Playa del Carmen, then Puerto Aventuras, and Akumal comes up before Tulum. The whole route is a free federal highway. Nobody should be adding a toll to your fare on this trip.

The variable is Playa del Carmen. The highway runs through the city on an elevated stretch and a set of traffic lights, and late afternoon is slower than midday. Heavy rain slows everything for an hour or so. That’s why we give a range and not a single number.

Where You Get Dropped Off

Akumal is split by the highway. The village, where most residents live, is on the inland side. The bay, the hotels, the condos and Half Moon Bay are on the sea side. A pedestrian bridge crosses Highway 307 between the two, and the municipality of Tulum repaired it and added LED lighting this year after residents had asked for it for a long time.

A private transfer takes you to the door of whatever you booked, on either side. Give us the exact name of the hotel, condo building or rental when you reserve. “Akumal beach” isn’t an address, and a villa on Half Moon Bay is several minutes past the main arch.

Beach Access: Know This Before a Day Visit

If you’re staying in a hotel on the bay, skip this section. If you’re coming for the day, read it.

The traditional entrance to Akumal Bay has been controlled by a private operator since 2018, a federal judge sided with that operator, and day visitors pay a fee to enter through it. In June 2023 the federal environment ministry approved a separate public access about two kilometers south of the original one. It exists, but it isn’t next to the village and there’s no local bus to it.

In practice, most day visitors pay the entrance fee or arrive with a guided snorkel tour that includes it. Fees change, so ask on the day and carry pesos.

Turtles, and the Rules Around Them

Akumal means “place of turtles” in Maya, and green turtles graze the seagrass in the bay all year. The bay is a federal refuge area managed by Conanp. The rules are short: don’t touch, chase, feed or hold the turtles, and expect a life jacket to be required on guided swims.

Our guide to snorkeling with sea turtles in Akumal covers the best hours and what the guided circuit looks like.

One thing to plan for in 2026: it was a heavy sargassum year. By the time the Navy lowered its alert from red to yellow, about 90,548 tonnes had been collected along the state’s coast, the highest figure in nearly six years of monitoring. A curved bay holds on to what lands in it longer than an open beach does. Check conditions the week you travel, and see the sargassum guide for the seasonal pattern.

Akumal as a Base

The reason people pick Akumal over Playa del Carmen or Tulum is that it’s quiet and it’s in the middle. Tulum’s ruins are a short drive south. Xel-Há is closer still. The cenotes around Tulum are an easy morning. And the agoutis in the photo above really do wander the gardens.

The trade is that you’ll want a ride for almost everything outside the bay. For the airport run in both directions, a fixed rate booked ahead means the number is settled before you land. If you’re comparing bases, here are the neighboring routes: Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
