Tulum Airport vs Cancun Airport: Which One for the Riviera Maya (2026)

Tulum airport vs Cancun airport for the Riviera Maya: real drive times, real flight counts, and which one actually saves you time depending on where you are staying.

If you are deciding between Tulum airport vs Cancun airport for a Riviera Maya trip, the short answer is this: fly into Tulum (TQO) only if Tulum itself is your destination and the flight works without a long connection. For everywhere else on the Riviera Maya, including Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, Akumal and the Cancun Hotel Zone, Cancun International (CUN) is the practical choice. CUN handled 19,460,554 international passengers in 2025. Tulum handled roughly 1.23 million passengers in total that same year, and lost a further slice of its schedule in 2026 when several airlines trimmed routes.

What Tulum Airport Actually Is

Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport opened for domestic flights on December 1, 2023, and took its first international arrival on March 28, 2024. It is a single terminal with one concourse, built about 20 km southwest of the town of Tulum.

The building is new and pleasant to walk through, which is a real difference from the crush of a Cancun terminal in high season. What it does not have is depth. One concourse means a handful of gates, a short list of shops and restaurants, and no airline lounge in operation as of late 2025.

Traffic peaked in its first full year at about 1.24 million passengers in 2024 and stayed roughly flat at 1.23 million in 2025, and airlines pulled back schedule in 2026. That matters less for the airport itself than for what it means to you as a traveler, which is fewer flights to choose from and fewer ways out if something goes wrong.

Flight Choice Is the Real Difference

From the United States and Canada, Tulum is served by a short list of carriers and routes:

  • American Airlines: Dallas/Fort Worth and Miami, year round
  • United Airlines: Houston year round, Newark seasonally from November to April
  • Delta Air Lines: Atlanta
  • JetBlue: New York JFK, seasonal in winter
  • Air Canada: Toronto and Montreal, seasonal from November to April

Domestically it is served by Aeromexico, VivaAerobus, Volaris and Mexicana. Cancun, by contrast, is fed by most major North American and European carriers across four terminals, all day, every day.

The practical consequence shows up on a bad day. If a Tulum flight is cancelled, the next departure on that route may be tomorrow. At Cancun there is usually another option within hours, on your airline or on a competitor.

Drive Times From Each Airport

This is where the decision is usually made. The two airports are about 2 hours and 30 minutes apart by road, so picking the wrong one adds real time to the front and back of your trip.

Playa del Carmen is the genuine tie. It sits almost exactly between the two airports, so the choice there comes down to flight schedule and fare, not to ground time.

When Tulum Airport Is the Better Choice

Fly into TQO if you are staying in Tulum town or on the Tulum beach road, and there is a nonstop from your home airport at a time that works. You save roughly an hour and fifteen minutes of driving in each direction compared to landing at Cancun, which is most of an afternoon over a round trip.

It also makes sense if your trip is short. On a four night stay, three hours of extra highway is a meaningful share of the holiday.

When Cancun Airport Is the Better Choice

Fly into CUN if you are staying anywhere north of Akumal, if you want a choice of flight times, if you are traveling with a group whose flights arrive at different hours, or if you are flying on points and need availability rather than one specific departure.

Cancun also wins on fares more often than not, simply because more airlines compete on the same city pairs. A cheaper Cancun ticket plus a private transfer south frequently costs less in total than a thinner Tulum fare, and it leaves you with options if the schedule slips.

Getting From the Airport to Your Hotel

From Cancun Airport our rates start at $32 USD to the Cancun Hotel Zone, the airport area and downtown Cancun, $52 USD to Puerto Morelos, and $69 USD to Playa del Carmen. Those are per vehicle, one way, for 1 to 6 passengers, and larger groups are quoted in the booking tool (see all current rates). Tulum, Akumal and destinations outside those zones are quoted directly, because there is no honest single number to publish for a route that changes with your exact hotel.

The rate does not change in high season, and it does not change if your flight lands late. Your driver tracks the actual flight and waits at arrivals.

How Our Prices Compare to Paying at the Curb

Taxis and unofficial stands at either airport do not run a meter and do not post a visible rate card. Negotiating a ride on the spot, without a reservation, commonly costs $20 to $50 USD more than a pre booked private transfer, and more than $100 USD on long runs like Tulum. A quoted $45 to $60 ride to the Hotel Zone often becomes $70 to $100 for someone who does not know the real price. A fixed rate agreed before you fly removes that entire conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tulum airport better than Cancun airport?

Only if Tulum itself is your destination and a convenient nonstop exists. Tulum saves about an hour and fifteen minutes of driving each way to Tulum town, but it has a fraction of the flights, and far fewer options if your flight is cancelled.

How far is Tulum airport from Playa del Carmen?

About an hour by road, which is roughly the same as the drive from Cancun Airport. For Playa del Carmen the two airports are effectively tied, so choose on flight schedule and fare.

How far is Tulum airport from Cancun?

About 2 hours and 30 minutes by car to the Cancun Hotel Zone. If you are staying in Cancun, flying into Tulum is not worth it.

Which airport do most Riviera Maya hotels use?

Cancun International. It served over 19 million international passengers in 2025 against roughly 1.23 million total at Tulum, and most resorts from Puerto Morelos through Akumal are closer to Cancun anyway.

Can you book a private transfer from Tulum airport?

Yes. Tulum is outside our three fixed price zones, so the rate depends on your exact hotel and schedule. Message us on WhatsApp with your flight and hotel and we will quote it directly.
