The state government kicked off a 183 million peso project in May 2026 to widen this road from two lanes to four, adding drainage, lighting, bike lanes, and a center median, with the first phase targeted to wrap up in November 2026. Crews have been clearing and leveling ground near the entrance to Playa Mujeres as of mid-2026. None of this should meaningfully slow a private transfer, but it does mean some construction activity along the route, and it’s part of why this corridor is expected to keep growing fast. The area already sees close to six million visitors a year and resort occupancy running around 85 percent.
No Direct Public Transport
Unlike the routes to Playa del Carmen or Puerto Morelos, there’s no direct ADO bus service to the Costa Mujeres resorts. Getting here without a private transfer means piecing together a taxi or an on-demand shuttle, which adds uncertainty right when you least want it after a long flight. Costa Mujeres is almost entirely resort territory: newer five-star, mostly all-inclusive properties along a stretch of white sand that hasn’t been built up as densely as Cancun’s main hotel strip.
