Private Transfer Cancún Airport to Isla Mujeres Ferry: Price, Travel Time & What to Expect

The two-leg journey to Isla Mujeres, done right: real transfer and ferry times from Cancún Airport, why Puerto Juárez is the terminal to use, and what's actually waiting on the island.

Two Legs, One Booking

Isla Mujeres is the one Riviera Maya destination on this list you cannot drive to. Getting there means a ground transfer to the ferry terminal, then a boat crossing. Door to door from Cancun Airport, most travelers land in Isla Mujeres in about 60 to 90 minutes, depending on traffic and ferry timing.

How the Two Legs Break Down

The first leg is a private transfer from the airport to Puerto Juarez, the terminal closest to the island and the one nearly every private service uses. That drive takes 25 to 40 minutes depending on traffic on Highway 307 and the Cancun ring road. The second leg is the ferry itself, operated by Ultramar, with the fastest crossing from Puerto Juarez taking around 15 to 20 minutes. Ferries run frequently, roughly every 30 minutes from early morning until 11pm, so you are rarely waiting long once you reach the dock, though it is smart to build in a buffer for ticket lines during high season.

One detail worth knowing ahead of time: cars do not cross on these ferries. If you are staying on the island, you will not need one anyway. Golf carts are the way people get around once they arrive.

Why Puerto Juarez and Not the Hotel Zone Docks

Cancun has ferry departure points in the Hotel Zone too, but Puerto Juarez is closer to the airport, cheaper, and used by locals as much as tourists, which keeps it running on a reliable, frequent schedule rather than a tourist-timed one. For anyone landing and heading straight to the island, it is the more direct route.

What’s Waiting on the Island

Isla Mujeres means Island of Women, named for a Maya shrine to Ixchel, goddess of the moon and fertility, that once stood at the island’s southern tip. Today most visitors come for Playa Norte, regularly ranked among the best beaches in the Caribbean for its shallow, calm turquoise water. Punta Sur at the southern end combines the Ixchel ruins with a sculpture park and ocean views, and the surrounding reef makes for some of the easiest snorkeling on this stretch of coast, including a well known underwater sculpture museum a short boat ride offshore. The whole island is compact enough to see in a day trip, though plenty of travelers end up staying longer than planned.
