What Time Should I Leave for Cancun Airport? Pickup Times by Zone (2026)

What time should you leave for Cancun airport? A zone by zone table of drive times and suggested departure times for international flights, from the Hotel Zone to Tulum, with a worked example and the days that need extra time.

What time should I leave for Cancun airport? For an international flight, plan to be at the check-in counter about 3 hours before departure, then add your drive time and a small cushion. In practice that means leaving the Hotel Zone about 3 hours 45 minutes before the flight, Playa del Carmen about 4 hours 15 minutes before, and Tulum town about 5 hours before. The table below gives a suggested departure time for every zone on our rate list, with the transfer price next to it. Prices were checked against our published table on October 12, 2026.

Rates are in USD, per vehicle, one way, for 1 to 6 passengers, as published on our price table. The quote tool confirms the final price for the hotel to airport direction. The drive times are our estimates for normal traffic, and the departure column already includes 3 hours at the airport plus a cushion of roughly 15 to 30 minutes. If you’re on a domestic flight within Mexico, airlines usually ask for less time, so check your own airline’s guidance and subtract accordingly.

Where the 3 Hours Comes From

It isn’t a number we made up to sell earlier pickups. JetBlue’s own airport page for Cancún tells passengers to arrive 3 hours before departure, and most carriers flying to the US and Canada give similar advice. The time goes into three lines: the check-in or bag drop queue, security, and the walk to the gate.

On a quiet Tuesday you may clear all of it in under an hour and spend the rest in the departure lounge. On a Saturday in high season you won’t. The trouble is you can’t tell which kind of day it’ll be until you’re standing in the line, and missing a bag drop cutoff by five minutes is an expensive way to find out. Your airline’s cutoff, not the departure time, is the real deadline.

A Worked Example

Say you’re staying in Playa del Carmen and your flight home leaves at 2:00 pm. Here’s how the math runs.

Three hours before 2:00 pm is 11:00 am, so that’s when you want to walk into the terminal. The drive usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Add a 15 minute cushion for a slow checkout or a stop for fuel, and the pickup lands at about 9:45 am. That’s exactly the 4 hours 15 minutes in the table.

Now run it the other way, for a 7:00 am flight from the Hotel Zone. Three hours before is 4:00 am at the airport, and with a short drive at that hour, a pickup around 3:15 am covers it. Early flights are when people are most tempted to cut corners. Don’t, because a 3:00 am checkout is a bad time to be rushing anything.

Things That Should Make You Leave Earlier

The table is a sensible default, not a promise. A few situations call for extra time.

Busy travel days. Saturdays, the weekends around Christmas and New Year, US spring break and Mexican holiday weekends all fill the terminals. Add 30 minutes.

A large group. Sixteen people checking bags at one counter takes longer than two. If your group travels in a Sprinter van, leave a little earlier than the table suggests.

Oversized luggage. Golf bags, surfboards and dive gear usually go through a separate counter and can take a while.

Rain on the road. A heavy afternoon storm slows Highway 307 and the boulevard into the Hotel Zone. In the wet months, from roughly June to October, give yourself a cushion on afternoon departures.

Tell the Driver Your Terminal

Cancún Airport has several passenger terminals, and they aren’t next to each other. Your airline confirmation or app says which one you’re flying from. Give that to us when you book the return, and the driver drops you at the right door instead of guessing. Airlines do change terminals from time to time, so check it again the day before you fly.

Booking the return at the same time as your arrival is the easy way to handle all of this. You send the departure flight, we set the pickup against it using the times above, and you get the pickup time confirmed before you leave home. You can also book it from the resort during your stay.
